Red Cross responds to Edmonton’s Storm
On July 11
th Edmonton was hit by a severe thunderstorm and downpour of hail as big as golf balls. Red Cross Emergency Response Team (ERT) members arranged for food and lodging for 21 tenants who had nowhere to go when their apartment was evacuated after the underground parking was flooded.
“We were busier than usual, but that’s the way of it,” said Beverley Harder, who is in her first year as an ERT responder. “I enjoy helping people because it’s so hands-on; their immediate needs are being met. It’s immensely satisfying.”
Damage caused by overland flooding is uninsurable and this could stretch the reserves of families and individuals who are picking up the pieces after the flood. “The Red Cross aims to provide for those basic needs not already addressed through the assistance of governments, insurance companies and other agencies,” said Colleen Hauck, Manager of Community Services, Central and Northern Alberta Red Cross. “The level of support we provide will depend on the magnitude of needs, support available through other sources and the generosity of donors.”
Red Cross is accepting financial donations to address unmet needs of those affected by the flooding. Donate today by calling 1-800-418-1111 or dropping by Red Cross House in Edmonton at 9931-106 Street.
