Volunteer Stories
Dedicated Canadian Red Cross volunteers inspire us every single day. Let them inspire you!
Across the world – across the Street
On January 12th, 2010, a powerful earthquake devastated Haiti, affecting nearly three million people. As humanitarian organizations began to respond to the urgent needs of millions, over 4,000 evacuees were welcomed to Canada by Canadian Red Cross volunteers. Many other volunteers worked tirelessly to respond to calls, letter and emails, supported local community groups organising fundraising events and ensured acknowledgement and receipts were sent to the thousands of Canadians who donated.
Many of the people who arrived in Canada were traumatized and had little more than the clothes they were wearing. Canadian Red Cross volunteers wrapped both adults and children in warms blankets to shield them from the bitter Canadian wind, gave children stuffed animals, and provided toiletries to families so that they could freshen up after a long trip. Volunteers spoke to these earthquake survivors to assess their needs and helped reconnect them with family and friends across the country.
While humanitarian workers helped survivors in Haiti, volunteers showed their tireless commitment to humanity here in Canada.
