China
With a population of 1.3 billion people, China is the most populous country in the world and one of the most dynamic and fastest growing economies. Despite its stellar economic growth in recent years, China remains the largest developing country in the world.
Being one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, China has also had to grapple with numerous natural disasters including the massive earthquake that struck Sichuan in May 2008 and most recently flooding and landslides in the summer of 2010. It is estimated that over the past 15 years, an average of approximately 300 million people were affected by natural disasters in China annually.
Canadian Red Cross
The Canadian Red Cross (CRC) has been an important partner in supporting disaster relief operations in China since the 1980's. With the generous contribution from Canadians, the CRC has actively responded to numerous appeals launched by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) for earthquakes, typhoons, and floods in China. The CRC is one of the main contributors to the IFRC appeal for the Sichuan Earthquake and continues to work actively to support the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) in its continuing efforts to meet the needs on the ground left by the earthquake.
CRC supported recovery programs include Shelter Reconstruction in Sichuan, Clinic Reconstruction in Gansu and HIV/AIDS Prevention among high risk groups in earthquake-affected areas of Sichuan. A number of community-based health projects addressing Health & Community Resilience are also under development.
The CRC and the RCSC have established a bilateral relationship to address health issues in rural western China in 1999 that successfully continues today. The current program includes eyesight recovery projects for poor cataract patients in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia and capacity building for township hospitals located in under-developed area of Xinjiang. The rural minority populations are the primary beneficiaries of the program.
