Floods in China
Unrelenting torrential rains have flooded China's eastern, central and southern provinces, leaving 3.5 million people homeless and affecting an estimated 100 million people overall.
With thousands of people eking out a precarious existence along waterlogged dykes and embankments, water-borne diseases and a lack of food are giving grave cause for concern.
In response to the flooding, the International Red Cross has launched an appeal for $8.1 million to assist 440,000 people with food, water, shelter and material aid.
