- Recognize sexual abuse and situations that may lead to sexual abuse
- Understand body ownership – "my body is mine" – and that they have a right to stay safe and be protected from sexual abuse

From c.a.r.e to Be Safe!
Formerly known as c.a.r.e, the Red Cross Be Safe! program was originally introduced 13 years ago. Largely unchanged since it began in 1981, the kit needed updating to respond to current trends in elementary education. The process, which took over a year, included:
- Multiple in-person consultations with teacher advisory groups in British Columbia, Ontario, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island
- Phone and email consultations with teachers in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.
The changes, specifically asked for by educators across Canada, include:
- Vibrant new colours and real photos
- More downloadable components – Resource Guide, Parent e-booklet, Be Safe! Overview for Administrators, UN Convention on the Rights of the Child Poster
- Stickers for children
- More music – In addition to the popular "My Body" song, Charlotte Diamond has provided 3 songs in English and French and Raffi has provided a song for adults entitled "Turn this World Around."
- Lessons have been simplified to 8 core lessons in total.
- Children have Rights! (new)
- Who are healthy friends and healthy adults? (new)
- I have a body
- My Body is Mine
- Touching can be safe or unsafe
