Avoid the flu this season
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can pose serious health risks and even death. According to Health Canada, flu season usually runs from November until April, and an estimated 10 to 25 per cent of Canadians could have the flu each year. Symptoms of the flu include fever, headache, fatigue and feeling weak, sore throat, muscle aches and pains, runny and stuffy nose, chest discomfort and coughing.
Most cases of the flu tend to be mild. However, if you don’t start to feel better after a few days, or if your symptoms get worse, consult a health care provider.
Tips to stay safe:
The Canadian Red Cross encourages prevention techniques to protect against illnesses like the flu.
Wash your hands often, using plenty of soap and warm water. Make sure to rub them together in a soapy lather, between fingers and under fingernails too, while counting to 15, away from the running water. Rub all the surfaces of your hands and rinse them off while counting to 10. Make sure to pat your hands dry with a paper towel or use a warm air dryer. If possible, turn off the taps with the paper towel, then dispose of the paper towel by putting it in the garbage near the sink.
Cover your mouth when you cough.
Use a tissue or a handkerchief when you sneeze.
If you become sick, stay at home.
Talk to your health care provider about the annual flu shot.
If someone in your family has the flu, follow these steps to ensure the rest of the family doesn’t get sick.
- Designate one person as the caregiver.
- Avoid sharing personal items (like towels, sheets, and eating utensils) unless they are cleaned after each use.
- Give plenty of liquids at the first sign of the flu and continue throughout the illness.
- Disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched such as doorknobs, switches, computers, telephones, toys, etc.
- Wear disposable gloves when in contact with or cleaning up bodily fluids.
