Traveling and talking boating safety

Traveling and talking boating safety

Andrew Byrne and Nik Himmelman are traveling across the province of Nova Scotia this summer talking about water safety. They are two out of eight summer students hired across the Atlantic Provinces as boating safety officers with funding from Transport Canada. Each morning, they hitch up a ten-foot display trailer to their van and travel to various festivals, day camps, and anywhere they can talk to people about boating safety.

“I love working for the Red Cross and being out there trying to save lives, it feels like a worldwide community,” says Byrne.

With a background as a lifeguard and competitive swimmer, Byrne says he’s spent his whole life by the water. Similarly, Himmelman worked as a sailing instructor and wants to make sure people are staying safe while participating in activities on and around the water.

“The best part about the work we’re doing is communicating with kids and seeing how enthusiastic they can be about water safety,” says Himmelman. “The younger we can get them thinking about water safety; the deeper the message will sink in.”

Another part of the work they do is checking pleasure crafts at yacht clubs to make sure people have the correct safety equipment on board.

“Most people really want to pass our checklist, and when we do follow-ups, we see first hand how people are taking our message to heart and getting the equipment that was missing the first time,” says Himmelman.

They both say they are pretty confident they’re making a difference in people’s lives.
