Open Water Wisdom Campaign: Keeping communities safe
“Water Safety education and awareness in vital in helping reduce the number of water-related deaths,” says Shelley Dalke, manager of national swimming and water safety programs for the Canadian Red Cross. “We are proud to be part of this initiative that will support Northern and remote communities in Canada with the tools they need to make activities around water safer.”
The campaign is specifically targeting remote and rural communities that are not usually served by current water safety and learn-to-swim programs. Community members have the in-depth knowledge about their particular water environments and as such, are the best people to keep their communities safe.
Participating communities will receive an education tool kit to help them set up awareness activities for local children, youth and their families, as well as a supply of lifejackets. Interested communities can apply here.
You don't have to be a participating community to benefit from the campaign. All the materials can be downloaded from the campaign website. In addition, there is an interactive platform so that communities can share information and learn from each other.
You can change the way your community thinks about water safety!
