Red Cross assisting Northern Ontario communities affected by forest fires
The Canadian Red Cross is working closely with local and provincial authorities to assist Northern Ontario communities affected by forest fires. Shelters have been set up for residents who are evacuated and emergency supplies, including cots, blankets and comfort kits, are being provided.
Contingency plans are also in place in the event that additional areas need to be evacuated and trained Red Cross volunteers are in place to assist.
“The Canadian Red Cross is committed to the comfort and care of the evacuees by ensuring their basic needs are met during this difficult time,” said Mike Morton, provincial director of disaster management in Ontario. “We are monitoring this situation closely and are prepared to provide any further assistance as required.”
The Red Cross is urging residents in the affected areas to be prepared in case of an evacuation. The best way to be prepared is by creating an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit, with essential items such as:
- Change of clothing and footwear for each person
- Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
- Personal hygiene items
- Special needs items - medications, baby formula and diapers, and equipment for people with disabilities
- Extra keys, for house and car
- Cash in small bills
- Important family documents (copies of birth and marriage certificates, passports, licenses, wills, land deeds and insurance)
