As part of National Volunteer Week (April 15-21) celebrations, the Canadian Red Cross, Ontario Zone is launching a special photo exhibit thanking its volunteers on April 19 at Queen’s Park in Toronto.

The exhibition, "Hometown Heroes: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Volunteers", includes 30 portraits of volunteers who are involved in various Red Cross programs and services in Ontario – everything from disaster response and community health to administration and governance. All the portraits were taken by Toronto-based photographer, and fellow Red Cross volunteer, Johan Hallberg-Campbell. Over the course of a year, Campbell traveled with Red Cross across the province to capture images of volunteers in their communities.

"Our volunteers are the heart of our organization," said Ron Kelusky, Provincial Director General of the Canadian Red Cross.. "They may be ordinary people, but for the people they assist, they are heroes. We are pleased to recognize them for their efforts through this special exhibit."

Volunteers play an important role within the Canadian Red Cross. Many Red Cross programs and services would not be able to operate without the support and dedication of volunteers. According to 2010-2011 statistics, in Ontario alone, the Canadian Red Cross has over 6,200 volunteers.
