Four Walmart Canada staff recognized by Red Cross for saving a life

Rescuer Award recepients from left to right: Karrie Barber, Jill Coles, Rick Summerhill and Connie Twist.

On March 30, four staff members at a Walmart Canada store in London, ON were surprised with Canadian Red Cross Rescuer Awards for saving a child’s life.

It was only a few weeks before that a mom and her three kids were shopping at that same store, when one of the children, a three-year-old girl, began to choke on a piece of candy. Hearing the mother’s panic-stricken screams for help, Karrie Barber, a cosmetics department manager, rushed over and without hesitancy performed abdominal thrusts on the child, dislodging the candy from the child’s throat.

Meanwhile, three other staff members, Jill Coles, Rick Summerhill and Connie Twist, took control of the scene and helped to keep the family and other people in the store calm.

“All of these employees deserve thanks for knowing what to do in an emergency and stepping in to help,” said Maureen O’Neal, regional injury prevention manager with the Canadian Red Cross.  “Because of their actions, a young girl is still alive today.”

In Canada, the average response time for an ambulance is eight to 12 minutes. The Canadian Red Cross recommends Canadians take a first aid course to learn skills and gain the confidence to know what to do in the first crucial moments of an emergency.
