Canadian Red Cross Meals on Wheels programs give vulnerable members of the community the opportunity to have nutritious and delicious meals delivered to their homes at a low cost. This enables them to maintain their health and independence. In 2010-2011, Red Cross volunteers delivered more than 298,000 meals to clients in several communities across Ontario.
Meals on Wheels is especially important to seniors in our community. Seniors are at particular risk of nutritional deficiencies if they live alone, are house bound, have limited income and are not eating from the four primary food groups. As the population of Canada continues to age, more people will be impacted by these issues. According to Statistics Canada, by 2041, 25 per cent of the population of Canada will be over the age of 65.
The Canadian Red Cross offers various community health programs in Ontario. For more information on programs and services offered in your area, please contact your local branch.
