Canadian Red Cross Encourages Albertans to have an Emergency Winter Car Kit
(Alberta) March 19, 2012: Just a few days ago you were enjoying the sunny, warn, spring-like weather; today, you're having a hard time seeing past the snow hitting your windshield. With winter storms forecast across southeastern Alberta, it's time to remember what makes for safe winter driving.
The Canadian Red Cross reminds everyone traveling on the roads and highways around Alberta that they should have a winter emergency car kit with them at all times. Every emergency kit should include:
- Shovel and ice scraper
- Extra clothing and shoes
- Crank or battery operated flashlight, with extra batteries
- Sand, salt or kitty litter
- De-icer (methyl hydrate)
- Windshield washer
- A first aid kit
- Battery powered radio and extra batteries
- Blanket
- Booster cables
- Fire extinguisher (5 lb., A-B-C type)
- Bottled water and non-perishable high energy foods, such as granola bars, raisins and peanut butter.
- Maps
- Tire repair kit and pump
- Flares
A car kit is relatively inexpensive to create and could save your life, or the lives of those traveling with you. It's also important to check road conditions and let someone know the route you plan on taking when you travel.
