Japan: One year later
One year ago, the lives of hundreds of thousands of people were forever changed when a 9.0 magnitude earthquake followed by a massive tsunami devastated Japan. While the Red Cross response to this disaster was immediate, efforts to help survivors recover will continue for many years.
To date, Red Cross teams have provided medical treatment to over 87,000 patients, psychosocial support and counseling to over 14, 000 people, and over 126,000 electronic appliance and furniture packages have been distributed to help families settle into their new home.
The Canadian Red Cross has a long-standing history of solidarity and support with the Japanese Red Cross and is committed to continue working together as they help survivors recover and invest in preparedness activities to ensure communities are stronger, safer and more resilient should they be impacted by another disaster.
