Meals on Wheels celebrates two milestones in Mississauga

Canadian Red Cross staff and volunteers as well as Meals on Wheels donors, partners and members of the community celebrate the launch of the new "Hot Meals" program in the Mississauga community of Malton.
The Canadian Red Cross and members of the Mississauga community gathered at the Malton Community Neighbourhood Centre March 5 to celebrate Meals on Wheels’ 40th anniversary in Mississauga as well as the launch of a new service to help residents living in Malton.

Introduced in Mississauga in 1972, the Canadian Red Cross Meals on Wheels program gives vulnerable members of the community the opportunity to have nutritious and delicious meals delivered to their homes at a low cost. In the first year of the program, more than 3,600 meals were delivered. The program has grown substantially since that time. During 2010-2011, 70 Meals on Wheels volunteers delivered 40,000 meals to more than 500 people in Mississauga.

“The Canadian Red Cross Meals on Wheels program will continue to provide meals to vulnerable members of the community, thanks to the continued support of the community, our partners, funders and the dedication of our volunteers,” said Cindy Malcolm, Director of Regional Operations with the Canadian Red Cross. “Thank you for the support you have shown to us over the past 40 years. We couldn’t do our work without you.”

During the event, the Canadian Red Cross announced its new hot meal program, “Hot Wheels”, now available in Malton every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The launch is part of the Red Cross’ continued commitment to help support vulnerable members of the community. The service is possible because of the generous donation of a mobile oven by Farmbro. The oven will help keep the meals warm until they are delivered.
