Iqaluit apartment fire response
During the night on Sunday, February 26, 2012, the occupants of a 22 unit townhouse complex in Iqaluit, Nunavut were forced from their homes with only the clothes on their back. A fire consumed the entire building burning it to the ground. The community is rallying to support the 21 families who have lost everything, but more is needed. The Canadian Red Cross is here to help.
The morning of February 28, 2012, Trish Fuller, a Canadian Red Cross volunteer in Ontario, boarded a plane loaded with 43 boxes of disaster relief supplies and traveled to Iqaluit to lead a recently trained Emergency Response Team based in the community and a fund has been established to accept donations in support of the Red Cross relief and recovery efforts in Iqaluit.
In the Arctic, where all supplies must be flown in, goods have high prices and limited availability. This creates a unique challenge for the impacted families who are trying to replace many items at one time. Having essential items brought in by the Canadian Red Cross helps ease the financial difficulties for families trying to rebuild their lives.
Canadians wishing to help support relief efforts underway are encouraged to contribute by
- Donating online
- Calling 1-800-418-1111
- By contacting their local Red Cross office. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked "Iqaluit Fire 2012" and mailed to the Canadian Red Cross National Office, 170 Metcalfe Street, Suite 300, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 2P2
