There are a number of ways the Red Cross can work in partnership with Aboriginal communities, including:
- Helping people be better prepared to prevent and respond to natural emergencies such as fires, floods and severe weather;
- Helping prevent injuries through water safety and first aid training;
- Giving people the tools and know-how needed to create safe communities and prevent violence and abuse;
- Strengthening the skills and knowledge available in Aboriginal communities;
- Supporting Aboriginal communities as they give voice to their needs and problem-solve from within.
These activities reflect the cooperative spirit found in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) recently signed between the Assembly of First Nations and the Canadian Red Cross. This agreement sets out the two organizations’ willingness to work together to improve and protect the health, safety and preparedness of Aboriginal people.
