Hurricane Igor Anniversary a Reminder to be Ready
A year ago, Newfoundlanders were bracing for one of the worst hurricanes to ever hit the province. Igor caused major flooding and wind damage on the Burin, Bonavista and Avalon peninsulas, in some cases isolating communities for days. And Atlantic Canada has felt effects of several hurricanes and tropical storms since, most recently Maria that also retained hurricane strength as it raced past easternmost Newfoundland and Labrador.
Canadian Red Cross volunteers contributed more than 6,500 hours to provide aid and distribute supplies such as water, food and cleanup kits to families and individuals impacted by Hurricane Igor. Most of those volunteers were once again on standby for Maria, which fortunately caused little damage after quickly losing strength.
The Red Cross raised over $686,000 to assist those most affected by Igor.
