Red Cross completes food distribution in South Somalia

This past weekend the Red Cross completed a food distribution benefitting 24,000 people in South Somalia, an area controlled by local authorities and where many international aid organizations do not have access.

The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement is active in the South of Somalia through the Somali Red Crescent and the International Committee of the Red Cross, which has had a presence in country for the past 20 years.

Since October 2010, the Red Cross has delivered emergency supplies to half a million people and clean water to almost a million people in Somalia. In addition, static and mobile Red Cross health clinics in Somalia have treated over 80,000 people since April, and the International Red Cross is continuing to scale up the response to the nutritional situation at their 18 feeding centres in Somalia. These measures will benefit up to 36,000 people.
