Duke and Duchess of Cambridge thank Canadian Red Cross volunteers for response efforts in Slave Lake

Prince William Accepts CRC Book From Volunteer Nick Conradi

Residents in the fire-ravaged town of Slave Lake got the royal treatment on Wednesday, July 6 as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made an unscheduled stop on their cross-Canada tour.

Prince William and his wife Catherine showed their support as they arrived in Slave Lake to tour the town and see the destruction first hand. Less than two months ago fires raged through the area destroying homes and leaving some residents with nothing more than the clothes on their back.

The couple spent two hours listening to local residents tell their stories, and chatting with Canadian Red Cross volunteers, RCMP officers, firefighters and members of the public. The visit provided an emotional boost to many residents who have been trying to rebuild their lives and, for some 400 families, their homes since the May 15, Alberta Wildfires.

Canadian Red Cross staff and volunteers who have been providing relief and recovery support to residents for more than a month are honoured the couple took notice of the humanitarian workers by sharing a few words during the walk about.

“They both thanked the Red Cross for the great work we are doing,” said Edmonton-based volunteer Nicolas Conradi, who presented the Prince with a book entitled “Wartime Letters Home” by Lois MacDonald Cooper. “Red Cross volunteers have come from across Canada to provide aid and support to residents of Slave Lake and the surrounding communities. It is an honour that both Prince William and Kate took time to recognize our contribution.”
