In 2011 Lauren joined the Beyond the Hurt program as treasurer and executive member. Finding her voice, she was able to make a difference by actively fundraising and promoting the program not only within the school but also in her community and provincially. She presented to the University of New Brunswick as well as to faculty at the District 18 Teachers’ Conference with confidence beyond her years becoming a knowledgeable source and reference for students and educators within the Fredericton and surrounding area.
In 2012 Lauren produced several educational videos on bullying. With additional media coverage in television, radio and newsprint her message has been brought out of the shadows. In May Lauren, her fellow executive members and teachers at George Street Middle School were awarded the prestigious Louise Russo Working Against Violence Everyday (WAVE) Award for their tireless efforts to combat bullying. The school was recognized for their marked decrease in bullying incidents over the course of the program.
Possessing a compassionate heart and a genuine desire to improve the lives of others, Lauren is also active in volleyball, badminton and the social committee. In addition to her anti-bullying campaigning she also tutors students in the community and volunteers her time at the senior residence visiting and engaging in various activities.
This fall Lauren will be looking forward to new challenges once she begins her studies at Fredericton High School. She plans to continue with the Beyond the Hurt program and will be working towards a future as an educator where she can continue to have a positive impact on her community.
