The Red Cross Red Crescent movement is currently responding to recent violent uprisings in Libya, which have resulted in the death and injury of civilians. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is in close contact with the Libyan Red Crescent Society, which has provided blood supplies for several hospitals in Benghazi. Libyan Red Crescent volunteers and first aid workers have been mobilized and are providing assistance.
Tunisian and Egyptian Red Crescent volunteers and first aid workers have been deployed to their borders to assist those who are crossing into their countries.
The ICRC has mobilized three teams of medical staff, including surgeons, who are ready to leave for Libya to help local staff. The ICRC hopes to have the teams in-country as soon as security conditions permit. The Norwegian, Finnish, and German Red Cross Societies are each contributing medical personnel to these efforts. These teams are bringing enough surgical supplies and other medical items to treat up to 2,000 injured persons. Additional supplies will be made available to local medical services as needed.
The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement has also responded to recent unrest in Egypt, Yemen and Bahrain by providing medical assistance, medical supplies and equipment, relief items and transporting the injured to hospitals.
The Canadian Red Cross supports the work of ICRC and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in countries experiencing armed conflict. Please click here for more information about how the Red Cross protects people in armed conflict.
