Profile of a Red Cross Health Delegate

Patrice Gordon

Patrice Gordon became a nurse because she was told a woman with a baby was not allowed to be a commercial pilot.  It was 1981, and her counselor in an aviation program told her she might want to look at nursing instead.

“I told him nursing would not suit me, not at all,” Gordon says. “I didn’t recognize it at the time but I’m a caregiver kind of person.”

The 48-year-old from Rossland, British Columbia has just finished training to be deployed as a nurse with the Canadian Red Cross Emergency Response Unit (ERU). The units are deployed in large-scale disasters when the local Red Cross does not have the capacity to respond alone. Gordon has been abroad on a humanitarian mission in Afghanistan, but she says she’s thrilled to now be working with the Canadian Red Cross.  “I love the fact that the Red Cross is neutral and impartial,” she says.

When deployed, Gordon will be leaving her three children behind, but that’s not what she’ll miss the most. “I can always send emails and Skype with my kids, what will be the most difficult is leaving my dog behind,” she laughs. “I hang with him a lot.”

She says 5-year-old Mucho Grande will just have to wait for her until she gets back from her mission.  “We got a lucky break being born in Canada and I think it’s a massive privilege to be able to help those that are less fortunate in times of disaster,” adds Gordon.
