How do I know if a fundraiser is legitimate?
Our canvassers are committed to recruiting supporters who wish to support the Canadian Red Cross through a monthly donation. However, door-to-door canvassers can accept, in some occasions, one time gifts by personal cheque or by collecting the individual’s credit card information. They are not allowed to accept bills or coins.
It is very safe for you to give your bank and credit card details to our door-to door-fundraisers. Our face-to-face partners are compliant under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards. This means that they follow a strict set of rules and regulations regarding credit card information. All personal information is kept confidential.
Street and door-to-door teams
The Canadian Red Cross works with external partners to support street and door-to-door fundraising efforts. Red Cross fundraisers may be wearing a vest, a coat or a golf shirt with the Red Cross logo easily identifiable and a prominently worn name tag. They will also have material on our programs and work. In Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia canvassers carry iPads to collect information electronically.
Telephone fundraisers
Telephone fundraisers working on behalf of the Canadian Red Cross will only be contacting people who have already supported the Canadian Red Cross in the past and will ask to speak to them by name. They will be able to respond to questions about the work of the Red Cross and upon request, will be able to provide them with the contact information of a Canadian Red Cross staff person. Our call centres are located in Vancouver, Montreal and the United Kingdom.
If you have any questions about fundraising efforts please call 1-800-418-1111 or email WeCare@redcross.ca.
