Expect the Unexpected materials
The only disaster-based educational program in Canada, Expect the Unexpected is designed to help children, youth, educators and parents learn about the importance of disaster preparedness. It features in-class and at-home activities for topics including climate change, weather events, knowing the risks in your community, safety rules, making a plan, getting a kit and dealing with emotions related to emergencies. The program provides a variety of teaching and communication aids for teachers, educators, students and their parents, including facilitator’s guides, activity booklets, videos, posters and participation certificates for students.

Parent BookletThe Expect the Unexpected program includes an activity booklet for parents. This reference tool and check list is designed to help the whole family learn about the main natural disasters and emergency situations that could occur and how to prepare for them. It also helps parents better assist their children in understanding and applying the material learned in class. |

Videos
These two videos serve as teaching tools for the facilitator of the Expect the Unexpected program. These videos can be used in conjunction with several activities throughout the program. You need a 56K or cable modem and Windows Media Player to view the videos.

Posters
The Expect the Unexpected program includes two posters featuring simple questions about natural disasters, potential emergency situations and advice on how to prepare for the unexpected. These posters can be used as prompts to present the program and serve as tools to increase student awareness of the importance of emergency preparedness.

Certificates of participation
