During a single week in late September, the Asia Pacific region was rocked by four disasters that impacted the lives of nearly nine million people in the Philippines, Vietnam, Samoa and Indonesia. Tens of thousands of Red Cross volunteers activated early warning systems to move people from harms way, rescued those who were stranded, tended to the wounded, provided safe shelter and offered comfort and support during what were extremely challenging days. Their work is far from done.
Canadians wishing to support Red Cross work in Asia Pacific are encouraged to donate to the International Disaster Relief Fund, which allows the Canadian Red Cross to support relief efforts quickly when assistance is requested.

Your help will make a world of difference
- In the Philippines, where 200,000 remain homeless and living in emergency shelters following Typhoons Ketsana and Parma, generous donations will ensure that some 550,000 people receive relief supplies and have access to clean water, health and medical support.
- In Vietnam, also impacted by heavy rains from Typhoon Ketsana, an emergency appeal will support assistance for 270,000 people who need food, livelihoods support, relief items, and water and sanitation services.
- In Samoa, where a tsunami took the lives of 143 people, the Red Cross will provide support to 5,000 of the nation’s most vulnerable people. Generous donations will help us provide shelter, psychosocial support, emergency relief goods, as well as water, sanitation and hygiene promotion programmes.
- In Indonesia, your support can help meet the vital needs of as many as 100,000 people whose lives were devastated by two major earthquakes. The focus of the emergency operation in the Padang area will be on providing emergency shelter, distributing essential relief supplies, and providing health care.
