Red Cross Response:
The Canadian Red Cross has been actively responding to this crisis since the fires started on July 18. Red Cross is working closely with provincial and municipal governments to assist fire evacuees with immediate and recovery needs. Thanks to our prepositioned supplies, the Red Cross was able to quickly mobilize and provide evacuees with immediate needs. In total, the Red Cross has provided more than 960 blankets, 32 mats, 436 cots, 792 comfort kits (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and other basic supplies), food and water to those affected by the one of the worst fire seasons in the Province.
In addition, the TELUS Red Cross Call Centre in Burnaby was activated for 11 days in partnership with the Province to provide up-to-date information on the fire situation across the Province. Over 100 volunteers supported the operation and they received more than 2,350 calls from the public.
Red Cross is also supporting recovery needs as our Volunteer Caseworkers are available to assess the outstanding needs of returning residents while offering assistance with urgent basic requirements. Assistance provided by Red Cross will not duplicate assistance provided through insurance, government or other agencies.
As of August 19, the Recovery Centres in West Kelowna and Lillooet will be closed and moved to the Red Cross Kelowna and Kamloops offices to assist anyone still facing challenges in recovering from the fires and the evacuations. Anyone who believes they may need recovery assistance from the Canadian Red Cross is asked to call 1-888-350-6070 to speak with a Caseworker.
