Our World At War

A Photo Exhibit Examining the Human Impact of War Launches in Victoria BC

Georgia, by Antonin Kratochvil
Still displaced 16 years on.
The 20 families living in this converted garage share one outdoor lavatory and draw water from a single tap. They fled Abkhazia 16 years ago during an earlier conflict and have, for the most part, been forgotten as authorities focus on re-housing the latest wave of displaced persons from Kudori Gorge in Abkhazia after the recent conflict in 2008.

Forty images; forty stories of suffering, struggle, and hope. The Canadian Red Cross is pleased to present “Our World At War” a photo exhibit featuring images from five world-class award-winning photographers. The exhibit, a partnership between the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and VII (a photo agency dedicated to socially-committed documentary photography), uncovers the human suffering and dignity of ordinary people living in extraordinary war torn, or previously war-torn circumstances. Acclaimed photographers James Nachtwey, Franco Pagetti, Antonin Kratochvil, Ron Haviv and Christopher Morris turn their lenses to Afghanistan, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Georgia, Lebanon, Liberia, Haiti and the Philippines, bringing individual stories to the fore, including women struggling to recover from sexual violence, famlies coping with displacement, and individuals recovering from personal injuries.

The exhibit runs from July 10–30, 2009.

1005 Broad Street,Victoria, British Columbia

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 11am–6pm; Friday:11am–7pm; Saturday and Sunday: 12pm–5pm
