Helping families in Honduras - Nelly Chávez
Ever since Nelly Chávez graduated from the Metropolitana University in Honduras with a Bachelor’s Degree in Community Health, she has wanted to serve vulnerable communities. Today, Chávez is a Health Promoter with the Honduran Red Cross Society’s Project REDES, which aims to improve the health of women in their reproductive years and children under the age of five. Chávez is responsible for 11 communities and 50 volunteers in Honduras.
Chávez enjoys visiting families and sharing in the culture of rural Honduran communities. Reaching these communities is not always easy. Each day she weaves her way through dogs, pigs, and cows that roam freely along the road to help families. On one visit Chávez met a family suffering greatly from malnutrition. Thanks to her, the family was able to receive helpful advice and support, which ultimately improved their health.
Chávez appreciates the training she has received through Project REDES. Thanks to the support of the Canadian Red Cross, Chávez is able to empower families to take responsibility for their own health.
