Many families with children who have special needs do not have adequate financial resources for medical equipment, even with the support of various funding agencies. Children with special needs require specialized medical equipment to enhance their daily activites, promote independence, and facilitate educational and recreational pursuits. In May 2001, the Canadian Red Cross Lower Mainland Region was contracted by the Ministry of of Children and Family Development to provide medical equipment repair and recycling services.

The Children's Medical Equipment Recycling and Loan Service (CMERLS) provides recycled, durable, specialized medical and therapeutic equipment for approximately 3,000 children in B.C., ages 0 to 19.  Several types of equipment are available by therapist referral including wheelchairs, special walkers and standers, bathing and toileting aids, and biomedical equipment.

CMERLS also provides loans and donations of specialized medical and therapeutic equipment to individuals, not-for-profit organizations, community centres and schools without equipment funding for special needs children in their care.
