Preventing Abuse and Violence
Every day in Southern Saskatchewan, children are emotionally, physically or sexually maltreated by parents, caregivers, acquaintances or peers. Many of these children suffer in silence because of fear, lack of information or a belief that they are to blame for their own maltreatment.
Statistics on abuse show that:·
- Youth are the victims of 50% of reported cases of abuse & neglect·
- 1 out of 3 abused children will become abusers themselves·
- 25% of Canadian children experience some form of sexual abuse·
- 1 in 12 children is regularly harassed in school by other students;
- 1 in 5 is bullied
In response to these startling numbers, the Canadian Red Cross has been delivering abuse prevention eductation to youth since 1984.Our mission is to break the cycle of abuse and neglect. Our focus is on prevention of all types of maltreatment, including: emotional, physical, and sexual abuse and assault, emotional neglect, and harassment and bullying.
