Red Cross Rescuer Award

When anything can happen at a moment’s notice, it is the acts of Good Samaritans that make a difference. For Chad Fraser it was just another ordinary workday at Walmart until he saved a newborn baby found alone in a bathroom stall. While the store manager called 9-1-1, Chad used his Red Cross first aid training to clear the baby’s airway and keep him warm until EMS arrived on scene.
The Red Cross Rescuer Award acknowledges the efforts of non-professional rescuers and off-duty first responders who go out of their way to save a life, prevent further injury and/or provide comfort to the injured. As well, Red Cross recognizes children who, without training, provided help. Success in the rescue is not mandatory.
While on a bike ride, near Spray Lakes, the Pierce family came across a couple calling for help. The couple’s boat had capsized in heavy winds and they had been in the cold water for over an hour. Casey Pierce jumped into the water, swam to the couple and pulled them back to shore. While Casey was in the frigid waters swimming to the couple, her sister Darcy called 9-1-1 and her parents, Heather and Bob, prepared to warm them. Both the couple and Casey were suffering from hypothermia once they arrived on shore. Without the help of the Pierce family the couple’s boating trip may have ended in tragedy.
