Peace by Piece - Red Cross Classroom

                                       SaskEnergy

Peace by Piece Red Cross Classroom is a curriculum-linked, classroom-based resource project that helps teachers and their students in grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 explore global humanitarian issues and understand how local actions, taken by students in Saskatchewan, contribute to a worldwide culture of peace.

Classes participating in Peace by Piece are provided with a complete tool-kit of learning resources – all the supplies and materials needed to engage in the project. Each activity is designed to be teacher-directed but student driven. In addition to learning about an issue, students take action to affect it. So far, this has meant community service, fundraising and various acts of kindness which have led to inspiring local and global connections and contributions.

The project is comprised of four pieces (themed sections) complete with lessons, reflections, and actions on a variety of global humanitarian issues and topics for which Red Cross has an important message to share, such as humanitarian values, disaster, armed conflict, emergencies, personal safety, human rights, diversity, and bullying.

Peace by Piece empowers students with the knowledge that they play an important role in their families, classrooms, communities, and the world. The program provides learning opportunities for students to make important connections between the impact of individual actions and how peace is built, little by little – locally and globally.

“This unit has made me realize how lucky I am and it opened my eyes to the rest of the world and how many kids and people need help.”  Grade 5 student

“What I learned is that on the inside everyone is the same.”   Grade 4 student

“I want to live in a world where no-one goes hungry and everyone is accepted for who they are.”    Grade 6 student

“I’m thoroughly enjoying the Peace by Piece unit you have put together. I have really enjoyed all the resources provided and the students have learned a lot! We have been having great discussions in my grade 6 classroom. I’m just having trouble getting through the lessons because we’re discussing so much! It’s been wonderful. Thanks again for the unit. It’s fantastic!”
