Today's warriors fight against the modern-day epidemic of HIV/AIDS. | |
"The historical landscape might have changed, but the job of the Warrior hasn’t. As Warriors, each of us needs to make healthy decisions about HIV/AIDS to ensure the survival of our communities."
–Whiley Eagle Speaker, Tipi of Courage program coordinator & Warrior
The Tipi of Courage project has reclaimed and revitalized the concept of the Warrior. The Red Cross believes that the lessons and role of the old Warriors within Aboriginal communities are central to help in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The teachings of the old Warriors are used as an example and tool to motivate and uplift the community in the fight against HIV/AIDS. This aspect of the program puts the power back into the hands of the people in their battle for health.
"A warrior walks beside his or her people, not above them. I’m a modern day Warrior and I know that I can work with my community to tackle HIV and AIDS
and the stigma associated with them.’"
–Tyrel Williams, Tipi of Courage Warrior

Warriors raise awareness and shatter stigmas. |
|
Tipi of Courage Warriors use information, community involvement, support and compassion to fight back against the epidemic of HIV/AIDS. The Warriors operate on a traditional clan system, whereby a trainer will oversee a group of ten Warriors and the Warriors will act as their own cell.
All Warriors are involved in outreach activities together at community events. The main responsibilities of the Warrior is to raise awareness and shatter stigmas.
Training to become a warrior or workshop facilitator is provided free of cost to the community and the individual. All Tipi of Courage warriors and facilitators will receive free Tipi of Courage gear as a symbol of unity.
