Canadian Red Cross Recognizes Four Babysitters as Heroes

(OTTAWA, March 13, 2008)  – Four young Canadians will be honoured this month for being outstanding caregivers through the Canadian Red Cross and the Hudson’s Bay Company (Hbc) Babysitter Hero Awards.

Sponsored by Hbc, the Canadian Red Cross Babysitter Hero Award recognizes outstanding young people who put their Red Cross babysitting training to work and demonstrate an exceptional commitment to protecting and caring for children. Recipients of the award go above and beyond the call of duty as babysitters, and have a strong dedication to creating a safe environment for children in their care.

“These four young people are babysitter heroes because they understand that being a babysitter is not just a job, it’s also a huge responsibility,” said Conrad Sauvé, Secretary General of the Canadian Red Cross. “Our babysitters course stresses this, by providing youth with knowledge and confidence to deal with life’s emergencies”.

The list of Babysitter 2008 Heroes and their regions are:

Tristan Unsworth – Howie Centre Nova Scotia
Kimberly Sweeney – St. Jerome Quebec
Elisha Heyman – Kingston Ontario
Kara Warnock – Surrey BC.

The awards will be held in four separate events throughout the country that focus on each recipient. Representatives from the Canadian Red Cross and Hbc will present each recipient with an award and a $500 Hbc gift card at their local Zellers store.

Since 1972, the Red Cross has trained more than one million babysitters in Canada to be prepared, fun and responsive caregivers. Sponsored by Hbc, the activity-based course features age-specific content that covers caring for kids, injury prevention, first aid and leadership skills.
