Red Cross preparing for impact of Cyclone SIDR in Bangladesh
The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and the Federation Delegation in the region are both mobilizing resources in anticipation of major impacts from Cyclone SIDR. The Bangladesh Red Crescent Cyclone Preparedness Program control room has been activated and is currently being staffed around the clock. Volunteers are preparing to support evacuations.
The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society operates one of the world’s most effective cyclone preparedness programs. This includes the dissemination of warning signals to vulnerable communities along the coastal belt, assisting communities to evacuate to secure shelters, and providing first aid and relief. The cyclone programme also operates a large radio system which provides reliable communications for the entire coastal belt in both pre- and post-cyclone conditions.
Red Cross Red Crescent disaster preparedness and relief experts, including the Director of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Cyclone Preparedness Program, are in the region.
