Tropical storm Noel has left a trail of destruction in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Mudslides and flooding have left more than 60 people dead in both countries, with thousands homeless and severe damage to infrastructure and homes. In the coming days, the storm is expected to slam the central region of the Bahamas and the northern coast of Cuba.

The Canadian International Development Agency has generously donated $100,000 to support Red Cross relief efforts in the area. In addition, Canadian Red Cross personnel and relief supplies are on stand-by and ready to be rapidly deployed if needed.

The Canadian Red Cross is appealing to the public to give generously to help 15,000 people affected by this disaster. Funds raised will be used to provide survivors with basic supplies, including water purification tablets, blankets and sheets, flashlights and mosquito repellent, as well as replenish depleted relief stocks in the Caribbean. More detailed assessments are being carried out to determine the longer-term needs of vulnerable communities.

Canadians wishing to support Tropical Storm Noel relief and recovery activities are encouraged to contribute by donating online, calling 1-800-418-1111 or contacting their local Canadian Red Cross office. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked “Hurricanes 2007” and mailed to the Canadian Red Cross National Office, 170 Metcalfe Street, Suite 300;, Ottawa, Ontario; K2P 2P2.
