HURRICANE IGOR ASSISTANCE
The Canadian Red Cross wants to hear from four groups of people who experienced losses from Hurricane Igor that struck the Burin and Bonavista peninsulas of Newfoundland and Labrador on Sept. 21, 2010 and may qualify for Red Cross assistance being funded through donations from individuals and corporations across Canada and events like the We Stand on Guard benefit concert. These groups are:
- seniors* experiencing financial burden due to their primary residence being destroyed or extensively damaged;
- low-income** individuals or families experiencing financial burden due to their primary residence being destroyed or extensively damaged;
- individuals whose employment was ended as a result of hurricane-related damage; or
- those who experienced increased expenses by offering temporary lodging for either of the first two groups noted above.
Enquiries and application information will be available Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Newfoundland time) by calling toll-free 1-855-758-0356 or sending an e-mail to igor@redcross.ca. An alternate telephone number is (709) 758-8400 and press 0 for assistance.
Total assistance available will depend on the number of eligible applications and their assessed needs.
Additional donations to its hurricane Igor response are still welcome and can be made online by clicking here, in person at any Canadian Red Cross office, by calling toll-free 1-800-418-1111 or by cheque to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked "Hurricane Igor Response" and mailed t Canadian Red Cross, Donation Processing Centre, P.O. Box 39, Saint John, NB, E2L 3X3.
* Age 65 or older, consistent with Canada Revenue Agency criteria for age-related benefits.
** 2010 annual net income less than $16,022 per individual or $26,811 per family, consistent with provincial criteria for low-income tax benefits. Those on social assistance programs may be directed to the provincial department of Human Resources, Labour and Environment for further support.
