Prevention in Motion Workshop – Preventing Abuse, Bullying and Harassment of Children and Youth

Prevention in Motion is a transformative professional development workshop for those who work with and inspire youth, or for any adult with an interest in learning more on this subject. This workshop will help you understand the definitions, indicators and effects of all types of abuse – emotional, physical, sexual and neglect; the definitions and dynamics of bullying and harassment; ways to proactively build safer relationships within your organization and the community for your staff and the youth; how to handle child and youth disclosures of abuse, bullying and harassment, including legal reporting requirements; and risk management strategies to create a safer environment.

  • Course Length
    The Prevention in Motion online workshop takes an average of 4 hours to complete. Participants have access to the online learning centre for a period of 4 weeks (1 month) and can progress at their own pace.
  • Cost and Materials
    The cost to take the Prevention in Motion online workshop is $45 per participant, and includes a reference manual. A certificate of completion can be downloaded and printed by the participant directly from within Red Cross OnLine once all the modules have been successfully completed.

c.a.r.e. Training Workshop

c.a.r.e. (Challenge Abuse through Respect Education) is a personal safety program with a focus on child sexual abuse prevention. Designed to be delivered by teachers to children in kindergarten to grade three, c.a.r.e. combines story telling, puppetry and hands-on activities to provide a learning environment focused on improving personal safety. The online c.a.r.e. Training Workshop has been developed to helpteachers and other presenters increase their knowledge and comfort level with child sexual abuse issues and the c.a.r.e. kit content.

  • Course Length
    The c.a.r.e. Training online workshop takes an average of 4.5 hours to complete. Participants have access to the online learning centre for a period of 4 weeks (1 month) and can progress at their own pace. Participants must have access to a c.a.r.e. kit for the duration of the workshop.
  • Cost and Materials
    The cost to take the c.a.r.e. Training online workshop is $80 per participant, and includes a reference manual. A certificate of completion can be downloaded and printed by the participant directly from within Red Cross OnLine once all the modules have been successfully completed.

Beyond the Hurt for Adults Workshop - Preventing Bullying and Harassment of Children and Youth

Beyond the Hurt for Adults deals with bullying and peer harassment—why, when and where it happens, how to recognize it and how to create and implement policies and procedures that foster safe, respectful environments for young people.

  • Course Length
    The Beyond the Hurt (for Adults) workshop takes an average of 4.5 hours to complete. Participants have access to the online learning centre for a period of 4 weeks (1 month) and can progress at their own pace.
  • Cost and Materials
    The cost to take the Beyond the Hurt (for Adults) online workshop is $80 per participant, and includes a reference manual. A certificate of completion can be downloaded and printed by the participant directly from within Red Cross OnLine once all the modules have been successfully completed.

Foundation (Core) Prevention Courses

These seven courses are the foundation of all training programs in the different RespectED streams. They cover prevention, an overview of adolescence, cultural competence, comparison between types of violence (child/youth maltreatment, harassment and bullying), vulnerable youth, and the framework for protection and intervention.

  • Course Length
    The Foundation (Core) Courses online include courses 1 to 4, 6, 7 and 13 (see descriptions here) (PDF, 50 Kb) and take an average of 21 hours to complete. Participants have access to the online learning centre for a period of about 7 weeks and can progress at their own pace, provided they complete weekly assignments.
  • Cost and Materials
    The cost to take the Foundation (Core) Prevention Courses online is $210 (effective May 1st, 2008) per participant, and includes a reference manual. A certificate of completion is mailed to participant once the facilitator has confirmed the successful completion of all courses and assignments by the participant.

Preventing Child/Youth Maltreatment Program

The first program developed for online delivery was Preventing Child/Youth Maltreatment.Red Cross OnLine provides interactive professional learning through a secure website. Learners, who are registered and have access with an individual login i.d. and password, are managed and coached by knowledgeable facilitators throughout their web based training. This program is offered to individuals wishing to gain practical knowledge and valuable skills for preventing abuse and violence in classrooms and communities. Adolescent development, cultural differences and risk factors are examined. If you choose, you can expand your involvement andbecome certified as a Prevention Educator with the Red Cross! (Refer to Prevention Educator Program below.)

  • Course Length
    The Preventing Child/Youth Maltreatment online program includes 14 courses (PDF, 50 Kb) and takes an average of 42 hours to complete. Participants have access to the online learning centre for a period of about 12 weeks (3 months) and can progress at their own pace, provided they complete weekly assignments.
  • Cost and Materials
    The cost to take the Preventing Child/Youth Maltreatment online course is $455 (effective May 1st, 2008) per participant, and includes a reference manual. A certificate of completion is mailed to participant once the facilitator has confirmed the successful completion of all courses and assignments by the participant.

Prevention Educator Program (for “It’s Not Your Fault”)

This program is offered to individuals who would like to become Prevention Educators for the Red Cross. It includes all 14 courses covered in the Preventing Child/Youth Maltreatment program, in addition to Course 15 in which methods for teaching prevention and delivering the RespectED’s “It’s Not Your Fault” youth workshops are explored. While the purpose of RespectED presentations is not to elicit disclosures, learners gain knowledge of how best to handle such occurrences.

  • Course Length
    The Prevention Educator online program includes 15 courses (PDF, 50 Kb) and takes an average of 45 hours to complete. Participants have access to the online learning centre for a period of about 12 weeks (3 months) and can progress at their own pace, provided they complete weekly assignments.
  • Cost and Materials
    The cost to take the Prevention Educator online program is $490 (effective May 1st, 2008) per participant, and includes a reference manual. A certificate of completion is mailed to participant once the facilitator has confirmed the successful completion of all courses and assignments by the participant.

Prevention Educator certification can only be granted once the participant has successfully completed some in-class mentoring/teaching with an experienced Prevention Educator.

Preventing Child/Youth Bullying and Harassment Program (for “Beyond the Hurt”)

In the Preventing Child/Youth Bullying and Harassment online program, learners gain knowledge of child/youth maltreatment and intervention, with a focus on bullying and harassment. Teachers and other school and community professionals are the primary audience for this intensive online training. Adults in these roles play a unique part in the lives of young people. When combined with their experience working with and presenting to young people, this training will make educators and professionals a powerful force for prevention of bullying and harassment in Canadian communities. The etiology, incidence and prevalence, indicators and effects of bullying and harassment are covered. Adolescent development, cultural differences and risk factors are examined. Online resources include a variety of learning activities and video vignettes.

  • Course Length
    The Preventing Bullying and Harassment online program includes 10 courses and takes an average of 30 hours to complete. Participants have access to the online learning centre for a period of about 9 weeks (2+ months) and can progress at their own pace, provided they complete weekly assignments.
  • Cost and Materials
    The cost to take the Preventing Bullying and Harassment online program is $315 (effective May 1st, 2008) per participant, and includes a reference manual. A certificate of completion is mailed to participant once the facilitator has confirmed the successful completion of all courses and assignments by the participant.

To get certified as a Beyond the Hurt Prevention Educator, the participant must also successfully complete some in-class mentoring/teaching with an experienced Beyond the Hurt Prevention Educator.

Promoting Healthy Dating Relationships Program

In the Promoting Healthy Dating Relationships online program, learners gain an understanding of healthy and unhealthy relationships, and prevention and intervention measures. The etiology, incidence and prevalence, indicators and effects of violence in youth relationships are covered. Adolescent development, cultural differences and risk factors are examined. Online resources include a variety of learning activities and video vignettes.

  • Course Length
    The Promoting Healthy Dating Relationships online program includes 12 courses and takes an average of 36 hours to complete. Participants have access to the online learning centre for a period of about 11 weeks (2+ months) and can progress at their own pace, provided they complete weekly assignments.
  • Cost and Materials
    The cost to take the Promoting Healthy Dating Relationships online program is $210 (effective May 1st, 2008) per participant, and includes a reference manual. A certificate of completion is mailed to participant once the facilitator has confirmed the successful completion of all courses and assignments by the participant.

To get certified as a Relationship Violence Prevention Educator, the participant must also successfully complete some in-class mentoring/teaching with an experienced Prevention Educator.
