Governor General of Canada awarded the Order of the Red Cross

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean was recently awarded the highest award of The Canadian Red Cross Society, Companion of the Order of Red Cross, during a private ceremony at Rideau Hall.  Her Excellency was inducted by Canadian Red Cross President, Jane McGowan and witnessed by the Society’s Vice-Presidents and Secretary General.

Under the leadership structure of the Canadian Red Cross, the Honorary Officers of the organisation include the Governor General as Honorary President, and the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition as Honorary Vice-Presidents.

The Order of the Red Cross recognizes outstanding humanitarian service, dedication, and achievement on behalf of the Society and the world at large. The award is a tangible way for the Canadian Red Cross to pay tribute to its volunteers and other individuals who have devoted their time and talents to the service of humanity.

The Order of Red Cross has three levels of membership: Member, Officer and Companion. Annual appointments to the Order are limited to twenty-five Members, five Officers, and three Companions. The medal itself, which is gold plated and sterling silver respectively, is a red cross encircled by leaves and centered in a larger cross with expanding arms. The medal is accompanied by a miniature and a lapel pin.

Established in 1984, the Order of Red Cross replaced the Honorary Counsellor and Honorary Member awards previously granted by The Canadian Red Cross Society.
