The Red Cross Response in the Lower Mainland Region

The Canadian Red Cross Lower Mainland Region has responded to large and small scale disasters. Every disaster is different, but the common thread is they impact peoples’ lives.  During the relief phase, Red Cross works with municipalities, governments and other relief organizations. In  the recovery phase when the media spotlight has often shifted elsewhere, Red Cross remains on the scene – helping those affected to rebuild their lives.

How We Respond when Major Disasters Strike

Canadian Red Cross disaster response in the Lower Mainland is led by a network of dedicated volunteers with the training, skills and expertise to respond to difficult situations at a moment’s notice.

When major disasters strike in the Lower Mainland

  • Red Cross volunteers and staff are there immediately, working with local governments, communities and other aid organizations to meet urgent day-to-day basic needs of survivors, including family reunification
  • Red Cross coordinates its work with other relief organizations to address gaps in assistance provided through municipalities, governments and insurance companies
  • Red Cross assistance is offered independently and impartially – with no regard for nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions
  • Red Cross remains on the scene to help address longer-term needs, such as the rebuilding of lives and communities and reducing vulnerability to future disasters
  • Canadians turn to the Red Cross to translate their care and concern for victims into meaningful help.  During the past 10 years, Canadians affected by disaster have received more than $100 million in assistance from Red Cross
