International Federation mourns loss of two Palestinian Red Crescent paramedics

Geneva, 6 November 2006

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies expresses its support and condolences to the families of two Palestine Red Crescent paramedics who were killed in Gaza on Friday 3 November.

Ahmad Al-Madhoun, 42, and Mustafa Habeeb, 26, died from injuries they sustained while endeavoring to provide medical assistance to people who were reported to have been wounded during an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) military operation in Beit Lahiya, south-west of Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza.

The International Federation states its solidarity with the Palestine Red Crescent Society and its volunteers, who work so selflessly to provide humanitarian assistance in Gaza and throughout the Palestinian Occupied Territories, often under very difficult conditions.

The Federation is deeply concerned for the security and safety of Palestinian Red Crescent volunteers and staff, and urges all parties to be mindful of their obligations under the Geneva Conventions, including the protection of medical personnel, and all those wearing the emblem of the Red Cross or Red Crescent.
