Canadian Red Cross Honorary Vice-President appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada

Janet M. Davidson, Honorary Vice-President of the Canadian Red Cross has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Janet M. Davidson, Honorary Vice-President of the Canadian Red Cross and Vice Chair of the Standing Commission of Red Cross and Red Crescent has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of a lifetime of outstanding achievement and dedication to the community, and service to the nation. The Order of Canada is this country’s highest honour.

Janet was among 77 new appointments to the Order of Canada as announced on July 24, 2006 by Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada.

Janet has been actively involved with Red Cross/Red Crescent for over 30 years, first as a senior staff member employed at the National Office of the Canadian Red Cross and thereafter as a volunteer serving as President of her local Branch and ultimately as a member of the Society’s Board of Governors as President for two years.  

Internationally, she has served for six years (1997-2004) as Vice-President (Americas) and Governing Board member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.  In 2003, Janet was elected to the Standing Commission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent where she serves in the position of Vice Chairman.

Professionally, Janet is Chief Operating Officer with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, Canada’s largest regional health system. She has direct management responsibility for three of Vancouver’s hospitals including the Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre, one of Canada’s largest teaching and research hospitals.

Over her career, she has received numerous awards for her professional and personal accomplishments from the private sector, educational facilities, the Canadian Government and the from the Canadian Red Cross, in recognition of her outstanding volunteer contributions  including the Society's two highest awards, the Distinguished Service Medal and the Order of Red Cross.

Janet is a strong supporter of volunteerism as demonstrated by her dedicated and ongoing commitment as a Red Cross/Red Crescent volunteer.  The Canadian Red Cross would like to congratulate her on receiving this honour and thank her for her ongoing support.
