Be Safe! Project Consultation

As part of the development of resources, the Red Cross will partner with Unicef Sri Lanka to involve child participation through a consultation workshop.

Objective for child consultation: To involve children and have their input in the development of the Be Safe! child safety program. 

Organizations consulted to date:

  • National Child Protection Authority (NCPA)
  • NCPA committee of Anuradhapura: Provincial Ministry of Education; Provincial Commissioner, Probation and Child Care Services; Counselor, Child training and Counseling Centre; Save the Children; District Coordinator, National Child Protection Authority; Medical officer for child abuse.
  • Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies (CHA)
  • Change Makers
  • ESCAPE
  • Plan International
  • Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement

Specifics addressed in the consultation process:

  • Identify appropriate language for use with the age group
  • Identify effective activities for inclusion in the program
  • Receive feedback on program key messages and safety rules
  • Determine effective formats for resources (eg. books, comics, bookmarks, posters, etc.)
  • Identify what 'helping persons' children feel comfortable speaking with, and how that can be facilitated

Participants:

15-20 children

Children ages 7-9 years

Diverse ethnic, gender, ability and socio-economic backgrounds

One parent or guardian for each child participant

Design of consultation / issues still to be discussed:

  • Selection of consultation site and consultation date
  • Consideration on how to mobilize participation of 15-20 children
  • Creation of a child friendly environment
  • Activities for input on Be Safe project
  • Activities for life skills development of children and adults
  • Activities for parents/guardians of child participants
  • Identification of child protection guidelines for the consultation (who will participate, response mechanisms for child and adult responses to the sensitive issues, and standards for interaction and contact with children, etc.)
