The one-minute-and-forty-second long shudder beneath the ground in the state of Gujarat, north-western India, literally shook people's lives to pieces. The earthquake of January 26, 2001, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, killed over 20,000 people and severely impacted the lives of 100,000 people who were injured and lost family members, friends, homes, schools, and businesses.
