March is Red Cross Month
This past year was one of an unprecedented number of disasters, and of unequalled generosity from Canadians. As always, the Canadian Red Cross continues to be where help is needed most, both locally and around the world. During "March is Red Cross Month", the Red Cross encourages Canadians to get to know our programs and services better. Here are just a few examples of how the Red Cross is helping others.
Disaster Services: Across Canada and Around the World ...
Whether it’s a house fire displacing a family, a flood affecting an entire community, or a tsunami that shatters lives across many borders, the Red Cross works with governments and other organizations to provide food, clothing, shelter, emotional support and family reunification, both in the short and long term. The Red Cross also helps Canadians of all ages to prepare for unexpected emergencies, and offers several programs targetted specifically for young people.
The Canadian Red Cross works around the world in cooperation with other members of the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement and local governments to bring urgently needed relief items reunite families and help rebuild communities. The Canadian Red Cross supports and manages development and rehabilitation programs, ranging from primary health care to water sanitation. Each year, the Canadian Red Cross sends about 100 professional relief workers on overseas missions.
Every day the Red Cross touches thousands of lives in communities across Canada. Through our First Aid Training we help to ensure that Canadians have the critical skills they need to prevent injuries and to save the life of someone else. Millions of Canadians have learned to swim and enjoy water-related activities safely, and drowning deaths have decreased dramatically, since we launched our Water Safety Services began 60 years ago.
Our award-winning program RepectED: Violence and Abuse Prevention Education helps millions of youths and adults better understand and prevent abuse, harassment and violence. And, in many regions, our Homecare and Health Equipment Loan Services provide long and short-term support to Canadians who need a helping hand.
Of course, none of this is possible without your help. Canadians have generously supported the Red Cross for over 100 years - both with financial contributions and volunteering their time. Thanks to your support, and that of over 30,000 volunteers, we can continue to be there for those who need us most.
This "March is Red Cross Month", we encourage you to explore what the Red Cross does in your community and how you can get involved. You will not only learn how to help others - but also how to help yourself in times of need.
