Instructor Development Program

Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor Course (AWSI)

30 h program (+ 8h teaching experience) for ages 15 years and up.

This certification is a prerequisite to the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course and covers : the foundation of instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision, and feedback. Candidates are evaluated during 8 hours of teaching and though individual study assignments. Certified AWSI, can co-teach the Red Cross Swim programs under the supervision of a fully certified WSI.

 

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course (WSI)

25 h program (+ 12h teaching experience) for ages 16 years and up.

This course further develops instructional ability by focusing on how to apply yhe information learned in the AWSI Course to effectively plan and teach the Red Cross Swim continuum (Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids, and AquaAdults programs)

Candidates apply their teaching skills and knowledge during 12 hours of practical teaching experience. Upon successful completion of the course, candites certified as WSI. The certificate must be renewed every other year.

 

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer Course (WSIT)

20 h program (+ 55h teaching experience) for ages 18 years and up.

  • be at least 18 years old;
  • have at least 2 years experience as a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor;
  • provide 2 letters of recommendation (e.g. one from their employer and one from a Water Safety Instructor)
  • provide a letter of motivation indicating why they are interested in becoming a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor;
  • Complete all preparatory work* and return it on the first day of training.
