Impact of the tsunami on the Maldives
Approximately one third of the country’s population of 300,000 was severely affected by the tsunami, which left 82 people dead. Twenty-six people are reported missing; 21,663 people were displaced from their homes. Some 70 of the 199 inhabited islands were particularly hard hit.
