Restoring Family Links

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has launched a web site where concerned persons in the disaster areas may register themselves to inform their relatives that they are safe and well; and their families can consult the list of names on the web site. In the disaster areas and elsewhere in the world concerned persons may register relatives about whom they are seeking information.

The information available on the web site may be displayed on lists in public places, or broadcasted by radio in order to be accessible to all persons with no access to the internet.

The web site can be accessed in English at http://www.familylinks.icrc.org/. To cancel a name or to modify information on the list please contact op_prot_as.gva@icrc.org.

As part of the Global Tracing Network, the Canadian Red Cross assisted Canadian families with:

  • Delivering safe and well messages collected by the ICRC and its partners
  • Notifying Canadians of the death of their non-Canadian family members after receiving information from ICRC
  • Providing support and up-to-date information about the situation in the affected areas
  • Referring Canadians to the family links web site launched by ICRC shortly after the disaster, which was used by the mobile tracing teams in Sri Lanka and Indonesia
  • Assisting Canadians to have their names removed from the web site
