International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement Activities

During the emergency phase, the Indian Red Cross Society headquarters provided the following relief to the tsunami affected people: 13,000 (non-food) family packs to Tamil Nadu; 6,000 (non-food) family packs to Andaman and Nicobar Islands; and 7,000 (non-food) family packs to Andhra Pradesh.

In the immediate aftermath of the tsunami, the Indian Red Cross Society through its branches responded to the needs of the survivors in the affected states (Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Kerala) in India.

The IRCS provided basic medical support, food, and offered psychological support and drinking water. Local resources were mobilized by the branches focusing on the relief needs of women and children.

The national headquarters of IRCS also mobilized 30,000 family packs from disaster preparedness stock in its regional warehouses and distributed these in Nagapattinam, Kanyakumari and in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
